The House of Representatives will soon begin debating the Budget Reconciliation Bill, which was recently passed by the Senate. This bill is nothing less than a travesty, including massive cuts to essential programs that provide vital assistance to children, the elderly, students, the poor, and all those who struggle to stay above the poverty line.
This bill is especially abhorrent considering the ongoing effort to make Bush's tax cuts permanent. Rather than repealing these wasteful and unnecessary tax cuts, the Bush administration chooses to further marginalize the poor who are most dependent on government programs for their survival.
Jim Wallis has a short article on this action alert in today's SojoMail in which he offers faith-based reasons for opposing the current bill. But there are many reasons beyond those based in faith to oppose this horrible bill. It is an issue of progressive values to care for the poor, for children, and for those on the margins of our society. It is an issue of social and economic justice. Let's do our part to let our representatives know that we won't stand for these cuts to essential programs!
